Eight year-old Reggie Wrecks imagines that by wearing his spiked, magical hat, he becomes Rrreggie T. Rex, fearless dinosaur extraordinaire. (The triple R’s in his name are there to emphasize the growl in his voice.) Once transformed, he is able to overcome any challenge: learning to ride a surfboard, swimming faster than an attacking shark, defeating a herd of triceratops at tug-of-war. Reggie’s parents, Ralph and Delaurus, humor him. His older sister, Rachel, however, has little patience for her creative brother.
Many prehistoric and modern animals are woven in the story along with maps and information about Hawaiian culture. The Wrecks family engages in many of the island’s popular activities. Rrreggie T. Rex’s Vacation on Maui is educational and could serve as a guidebook and souvenir.
