Five hundred years have passed since a man took one small step on the moon. Now humankind is ready for the next giant leap. The starship, ESC-1, the most ambitious, costly project ever undertaken, embarks on its historic journey. The destination is light-years and decades away but Captain Tara Nelson and crew are ready for any challenge. Yet, millennia ago, events were set into motion that will turn their new home, a pristine moon circling a ringed gas giant, into a cosmic bull's eye. As the colony thrives, a strange anamoly is discovered. From the star system's outer reaches, waves of asteroids are plunging toward their world. Initially, surrounded by 26th century technology, it is little more than a nuisance. Then, inexplicably, that technology fails and they are completely at the mercy of the deadly, onrushing storm.

About the Author:

Mel Highline is a former navy petty officer, air traffic controller, automation specialist and pilot. In 2006, he retired from the Federal Aviation Administration after thirty years of government service. Hobbies have, over the years, included flying, hiking, bicycling, tennis, golf and reading science fiction. Since retirement however, his interests have been centered on a second career - that of a writer of science fiction and historical fiction. He lives in Washington State with his wife, Julie, and a pair of Jack Russell terriers. The former provides inspiration and comfort when the going gets tough while the latter ensures the household is safe and secure from the many wily, and elusive, squirrels, possums and raccoons that frequent the back yard.
Mel grew up in a small southeastern Colorado farming community. While in high school, he was introduced to Isaac Asimov's classic, the Foundation Trilogy. It was a superlative preamble to the genre and his interest never stopped growing. During the years in the navy, he read the works of Blish, Clark, McCaffrey, Silverberg, Tolkien, and of course, as much Asimov as possible during the long cruises overseas. After the navy, and college, he returned to Colorado for a few years and then moved to the Evergreen State. It was there, while visiting a little town on the Olympic Peninsula where an author's symposium was being conducted, the idea surfaced that maybe he could write a novel as well.
That was January 2003 and if someone had told him at the time it would take six years to write the story, he would have dismissed the whole idea as foolhardy. Fortunately, no such statement was made and so now, here it is. The author sincerely hopes that there are those who find enjoyment and inspiration from his labors, just as he did long ago when reading the many works of Asimov.
