When that trade involves making a product, the presentation includes a description of the craftsman’s process. The publisher indicates the reading level as four, and while the books’ relatively large type and square format are consistent with a fourth-grade audience, the readability level appears to be several grades higher. The Gunsmith traces the increasing use of guns and their manufacture in the colonies from the early 1600s to the late 1700s. The appended activity is a water-gun version of “Capture the Flag.” In each book, the informative text is illustrated with tinted engravings and paintings from earlier eras as well as excellent color photos of artifacts and replicas and reenactments of historical trades in Colonial Williamsburg.
