9781608931798: Iconic: Perspectives on the Man-Made World

PDN-award-winning photographer Brian Vanden Brink's keen sense of how cultural changes bear out in the structures we build is the central theme in this striking follow-up to the award-winning Ruin. Iconography runs throughout the book, as each structure presented is iconic either for its unique contribution to the field of architecture or for its representation of American culture. Stunning color and black-and-white photographs are paired with short captions explaining both the architectural significance and the image's personal importance to Brian. Examples include one-room schools, country fairs, drive-thru hotdog shacks, lighthouses, France's Reims Cathedral, and the Salk Institute.

About the Author:

Brian Vanden Brink has been photographing architecture for more than 30 years. His work has been widely featured in such publications as Architectural Digest, Architectural Record, Metropolitan home, Coastal Living, Cottage Living, The New York Times Magazine, Old House Journal, Custom Home, Yankee, and Down East. His photographs have also been the subjects of five books.

Review:

"Man has gained the power to reshape the world in his own image. "Iconic: Perspectives on the Man-Made World" is a collection of full color photography from Brian Vanden Brink, as he explores the creations of mankind. These conceptually simple photos capture a feel of a world taken far away from its natural state and the triumph of man over nature. With much to ponder throughout, "Iconic" is a strongly recommended addition to any artistic photography collection of for anyone considering a coffee table book that provokes thoughts in ways one may not have considered before." -- Midwest Book Review
