Providing close air support to ground troops in Vietnam was hazardous anytime, but in March 1966, the Special Forces in the old French Fortress of Ashau were in particular trouble as the Viet Cong closed in. When an American pilot went down, his death was a near certainty. That s when Major Bernie Fisher had a decision to make: leave the pilot to his fate or undertake a near-suicidal landing to get him out. Fisher landed his aircraft in the face of withering ground fire and taxied almost the full length of a runway littered with battle debris and parts of an exploded aircraft to attempt to rescue the downed airman. Fisher is one of just sixteen members in the history of the Air Force to earn the Congressional Medal of Honor.

"As a former pilot and navigator with 195 combat missions over Vietnam, I found " Beyond the Call of Duty" to be not only fascinating but extremely accurate. This is the kind of book you don't put down, as it so vividly describes the life, the joys, and the heartaches of an Air Force aviator." Ted M. Demars, Lt. Col. USAF Retired, Spokane, Washington--Lt. Col. Ted M. Demars"
"Heroes to me are people who, when things get really bad, they get really good. Bernie went into the rescue without even knowing who [the down pilot] was he just knew that an aviator was down and burning. His loyalty was to the uniform and to the family the Air Force family." Jon Lucas, A1-E pilot and recipient of the Air Force Silver Star awarded for gallantry in action--Jon Lucas"
"I love airplanes and I love airplane stories, but this book is about more than airplanes. After finishing "Beyond the Call of Duty" I have a new hero. Bernie Fisher's daring mission under fire in Vietnam had me on the edge of my seat." John Bytheway, best-selling author--John Bytheway"
