I conceived the idea for a novel about a backpacking trip along the John Muir Trail about 25 years ago. On and off with many revisions and rewrites and other writing projects, it took around 20 years, honest. That doesn't mean I wrote all the time on this particular book, but I kept coming back to it. I just could never get it out of my head.
The stunning beauty of the Sierra Nevada Mountains in California and reading about the naturalist John Muir inspired me to write a novel describing Yosemite and the John Muir Trail and to put characters and a story into that setting.

The Mountain of Seven Gables is a soul searching journey for Josh Gibson, who lost his faith in Vietnam and believes that life should not demand another sacrifice. It is an emotional roller coaster for Becky, driven by circumstances to choose between the man she loves and her sister's children. Saul is a mountaineer whose terrible secret is revealed to Josh on the mountain. The book takes the reader down a trail to the very depths of Saul's religious beliefs. In the end all of these characters learn about pain and the possibility of healing.
Earl Rogers, a native Californian, graduated from Beverly Hills High School and UCLA. He is the son of Bogart Rogers, a former Hollywood screen and short story writer, and he is a nephew of Adela Rogers St Johns, author and sports writer for the Hearst newspapers. Mr. Rogers has lived in Los Angeles, San Diego, and Sacramento and has hiked and backpacked extensively in the mountains of California. He has published two books, A Yankee Ace in the RAF, a collaborative work published by the University Press of Kansas, and Flying the Rim, a memoir about aerial prospecting for uranium. He has written numerous articles for travel, outdoor, and aviation publications and local newspapers.
