Some say that when we are born, our life is like a blank sheet of paper. What we become, along with the life experiences we encounter, are what is written on that sheet. That is true and not true. They have assumed that everyone's blank sheet is made of exactly the same stuff. That is not true. Each of us begins with a blank sheet, but that sheet is unique and precious for each one of us. How our life experiences mark our sheet is dependent upon the composition and structure of our unique individual sheet. That is determined before our birth. I use a specific paper and ink for my images. Through the years of using this paper and ink I have come to know, in a common sense, how the paper will react to the different techniques I use. Therefore I have some idea how the image will unfold. When I use a different paper or ink, the results of the same techniques render a much different image on the paper's surface. Our individual lives are preciously different, in spite of the common life experiences we share, because our starting sheets are unique. The visual and oral images carried on the pages of this volume convey, with simplicity and conciseness, their author's perception of our cultural ethos. Done with humor and poignancy, both writings and images are engaging and challenging. You will wonder, laugh, and cry.
