The Adirondack region has long been a favorite of skiers, as its beautiful mountains and deep snow cover provide it with the perfect landscape. Downhill ski areas developed during the Great Depression, when New Yorkers looked for an affordable escape to beat the winter blues. Over the coming decades, ski areas expanded with new lifts, lodges and trails. Despite the popularity of the sport, many ski areas have disappeared, yet countless people still hold fond memories of them. Ski historian Jeremy Davis chronicles the history of these vanished ski areas with photographs and memories from those who enjoyed them, while also paying homage to restored and classic skiing opportunities still available in the Adirondacks.

About the Author:

Jeremy Davis grew up in Chelmsford, Massachusetts, and learned to ski at Nashoba Valley. In the 1990s, he skied frequently in southern Vermont and Lost Ski Areas Project (nelsap.org) began to explore the lost ski areas in that region. He founded the New England in 1998 and graduated from Lyndon State College in Lyndonville, Vermont, in 2000 with a degree in meteorology. He has served on the board of directors of the New England Ski Museum since 2000 and is employed as a senior meteorologist at Weather Routing Inc. He is also the author of Lost Ski Areas of the White Mountains. Residing in Saratoga Springs, New York, Davis remains a frequent skier in southern Vermont today.

Review:

"The 160-page paperback has 75 black-and-white photos, including a 1934 picture of Schenectady's snow train to North Creek, and is divided into four regions: Gore Mountain, Lake George-Schroon Lake, Sacandaga Lake-Foothills and Speculator-Old Forge.

The story of each ski area and why it disappeared is based on Davis's interviews with local historians and the people who operated the areas, worked or skied there." --The Schenectady Daily-Gazette

"Many of the ski areas first opened during the Great Depression and were gone by the early 1950s. However, author Jeremy Davis of Wilton has brought them back to life with his new book..." --The Saratogian
