9781609498269: Kansas Forts and Bases:: Sentinels on the Prairie

The relationship between Kansas and the science of war is ingrained, consistent and evident, yet it seems antithetical to the quiet, conservative farmer who is the quintessential image of the state. It is not. The same values created both, and both created Kansas. From early exploration of America, Bleeding Kansas, the Civil War and the Plains Indian wars to the world wars and the modern era, the forts and bases of the Sunflower State have been central to America's defense. Beginning with Fort de Cavagnial in 1744 through to the defunct fields of Cold War missile silos, historians Debra Goodrich Bisel and Michelle M. Martin provide a guide to the forts and posts throughout Kansas.

About the Author:

This is Debra Goodrich Bisel's second book with The History Press. The Civil War in Kansas: Ten Years of Turmoil was released in 2012. Deb is a graduate of Washburn University in Topeka, Kansas, with a B.A. in history. She serves as president of the Shawnee County Historical Society and promotes the history of many sites, including the Topeka Cemetery. She serves on the selection committee for the Kansas Hall of Fame (located at the historic Great Overland Station) and has appeared in numerous documentaries and talk radio shows across the nation on subjects related to the Civil War. She is writing the dual biography of the Civil War's first ladies, Mary Lincoln and Varina Davis. In addition to contributing to several magazines and websites, she blogs for Mother Earth News. Deb is married to Kansas Music Hall of Fame inductee Gary Bisel, and they make their home in Topeka.

Michelle M. Martin is a Michigander by birth and a Kansan by choice. Earning her B.A. and M.A. degrees in history from Western Michigan University, Martin arrived in Kansas in 1997. A history professor, living history interpreter, author and photographer, Martin founded her own historical consulting company--Discovering History--and serves as a historical consultant for the television, film and print industries. Her work has been aired on the History Channel, PBS and the National Geographic Channel. She is a living history interpreter and has volunteered her time at Fort Scott National Historic Site, Fort Larned National Historic Site, Wilson's Creek National Battlefield and Mine Creek Battlefield State Historic Site (Kansas) to name just a few. Her photographs have been featured in magazines and newspapers in the Central Plains. Martin's passion is preserving the rich tapestry of the American historical narrative and sharing it with the public. When not researching, writing and helping preserve history Martin enjoys storm chasing, photography, traveling to historic sites, hiking and spending time with her cat Josie.
