This book is both a celebration of the life and career of the eminent literary scholar, critic, and journalist John Sutherland and an extension of Sutherland’s work in various fields, including nineteenth- and twentieth-century Anglo-American literature, the publishing industry, and its impact upon creativity and literary puzzles. With contributions from over twenty-five distinguished critics, literary journalists and scholars, this book goes beyond merely describing Sutherland’s work. The essayists pay homage to Sutherland while also staking their own critical/scholarly claims. From investigating the publishing dimension, Victorians major and minor, the complexities of Dickens and George Eliot, the “archeology” of Pride and Prejudice to examining the implications of Shakespearean souvenirs, literary puzzles, and Non-Victorians, the essays offer fresh dimensions to Sutherland’s rich career as a professor, critic, and journalist.

About the Authors

Simon Eliot is Professor Emeritus of the History of the Book at the School of Advanced Study, University of London, UK. He is a general editor of The History of Oxford University Press (2014) and the co-editor of A Companion to the History of the Book (2009), with Jonathan Rose. He has just directed an AHRC-funded project on the history of the Ministry of Information, 1939-46.

Lara Feigel is a Professor of Modern Literature and Culture at King's College London. She is the author of four previous works of non-fiction: Literature, Cinema and Politics, 1930-1945 (2009), The Love-charm of Bombs (2013), The Bitter Taste of Victory (2016) and, most recently, Free Woman (2018), as well as one novel, The Group (2020). She is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Literature and writes regularly for the Guardian and other publications. Lara lives in Oxfordshire.

David Lodge was an internationally acclaimed author, critic and academic. His novels have been awarded the Hawthornden Prize, the Whitbread Book of the Year Award and twice shortlisted for the Booker Prize (for Small World in 1984 and for Nice Work in 1988). His influential works of literary criticism continue to shape the way we read literature today.

René Weis is Professor of English at University College London and a distinguished editor and biographer of Shakespeare.

William Baker is Distinguished Chair Qiantang River Professor, Hangzhou Normal University, Hangzhou, PRChina and Distinguished Professor Emeritus, Northern Illinois University, USA. Co-Editor, Year's Work in English Studies, he is the author/editor of numerous books: his co-authored Harold Pinter: A Bibliographical History and The Letters of Wilkie Collins were honoured by Choice as the year's most outstanding books (2006 and 2000). The author of numerous articles on Shakespeare, including his William Shakespeare (2009), translated into Chinese. Recent publications include Pinter's World (2018), contributions to Tom Stoppard in Context (2021), and the co-edited Wilkie Collins in Context (2023).
