Kansas City's public television station, KCPT Channel 19, went on the air in 1972. It had a miniscule staff of visionaries or fools (depending on your view) operating from a low-slung building with a trailer and transmitter on the outskirts of unincorporated Blue Summit, Mo. The annual budget was $250,000. The signal, on a good day, reached the city limits. But five years later, nobody had been forced to declare bankruptcy. Nobody had thrown in the towel. The staff moved to expanded headquarters on 31st Street in midtown. Supporters gave $504,000 to help pay for the relocation. Now after 50 years of innovative broadcasting, some perilous moments, gutsy stands and some luck, the Channel 19 trophy case holds 30 Emmys. The mail still brings $10 and $20 checks from people whose favorite programs are on KCPT but can t afford to contribute more to support the station. Read the inside story of the talented people who made the trip as told by one of the key founding members of the station, Ed Matheny Jr.
