A mountaintop mansion. A motley collection of guests. A murder. This weekend has all the makings of a classic, cozy mystery story. And a story is all it’s supposed to be—acted out by noted authors and eager fans at the atmospheric Mohonk Mountain House resort in upstate New York.

Along with a gaggle of his peers, Mallory’s been invited to join the fun by donning a costume and an alter-ego to pose as a “suspect.” But before you can say “nobody leaves this room!”, Mallory is once again thrust into the role of driven detective when the game’s designated “corpse” turns up decidedly dead.

There’s no doubt that the victim, notorious mystery-novel critic Kirk Rath, incited the murderous wrath of nearly every writer he reviewed. But even the most scathing critical barbs never drove a writer to put down the pen in favor of the sword. And even Mallory is baffled by the curious circumstances surrounding the mystery within a mystery. Did he actually witness Rath being run through by a masked figure in the snowy darkness? Was Rath really spotted alive and sneering after the bloody fact? Is someone playing mind games? And is everyone in the house fair game?

Murder will out, as they say. But can even the masterful Mallory outwit a roguish gallery of the finest plotters in print?

About the Author:

Max Allan Collins is the New York Times best-selling author of Road to Perdition and multiple award-winning novels, screenplays, comic books, comic strips, trading cards, short stories, movie novelizations, and historical fiction. He has scripted the Dick Tracy comic strip, Batman comic books, and written tie-in novels based on the CSI, Bones, and Dark Angel TV series; collaborated with legendary mystery author Mickey Spillane; and authored numerous mystery series including Quarry, Nolan, Mallory, Eliot Ness, and the bestselling Nathan Heller historical thrillers. His additional Mallory novels include No Cure for Death, The Baby Blue Rip-Off, Kill Your Darlings, and A Shroud for Aquarius.

From Publishers Weekly:

Mystery-writer and -writing lore pervade this new effort by the author of A Shroud for Aquarius. Crime writer Mallory is invited to a mystery weekend at Mohonk Mountain House in upstate New York. As in real-life Mohonk mystery weekends, crime writers and fans are "suspects" and detective teams. The "victim" is to be a nasty, powerful critic who is thoroughly disliked. He storms out in a snit during the first session, and later that night when Mallory looks out of the window in his room, he sees the critic apparently being murdered. There are no other witnesses and no corpse so Mallory wonders if the killing is a hoax or part of the mystery weekend program. When Mallory and his girlfriend Jill find the critic's body the next day atop the mountain, a blizzard prevents their contacting the police. Mallory begins his sleuthing that climaxes in a snowbound, classic confrontation with everyone in dinner clothes. Adepts will spot the solution just ahead of Mallory, the mystery-within-a-mystery is a snap, and Mallory's quips wear thin.
