Pete Birle has been passionate about books from the very beginning. First, he loved reading them. Then, while still a kid, he began writing them. From his first story, Hugo: The Mouse With No Tail (which he co-wrote with three elementary school friends), to countless magazine and newspaper articles, to his published books, Pete has never stopped writing.
His speciality: sports stories for kids. As a former youth athlete, Pete enjoys writing about the players, teams and games that were the highlight of his years growing up on the New Jersey Shore. From School Library Journal:
Gr 4–6—Continuing this NBA basketball series, these books briefly cover the history of each team and well-known players. Each title includes a memorable story or two, such as the one about Pau Gasol from Spain, who originally played for the Memphis Grizzlies. He was traded to the L.A. Lakers for several players, which is not that unusual; however, with this trade, the Memphis Grizzlies received four players, including two future first-round picks as well as Pau's younger brother, Marc. Appropriate basketball vocabulary ("Chandler missed a difficult teardrop from eight feet out") adds flavor to the narrative text. The colorful action shots, arranged in a pleasant array, will draw in reluctant readers. There is no bibliography for report writers. While some titles in this series may be regionally more popular than others, fans will appreciate reading about their favorite teams. Additional titles in the series include Detroit Pistons, Golden State Warriors, Washington Wizards, and Phoenix Suns.—Blair Christolon, Prince William Public Library System, Manassas, VA
