Imagine stepping back in time to 1800s America, where a land still wild and uncharted beckoned to be explored. This is the land that President Jefferson tasked Meriwether Lewis and William Clark to survey, taking them on a nearly three-year journey across the then unknown expanse of territory west of the United States. Two hundred years later, another expedition set out to follow in these brave men and women's footsteps, traveling overland from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, to the Pacific Coast and back again. Those involved in this reenactment, known as the Discovery Expedition of Saint Charles, Missouri (DESC), sought to relive the trials and joys experienced by the original expedition members, participating in a three-year living history event. Using the eight journals from the Corps of Discovery, the modern day crewmembers recreated their predecessors' journey, adhering as precisely as possible to the original timeline, route, and recorded events. Author Ed Scholl, retired army colonel, was quick to sign on to the DESC and take part in this once in a lifetime opportunity. Just as many of the original expedition members had done, he journaled about his experiences, seeking to chronicle and commemorate the journey. He later put these in book form, making Lewis and Clark in the Twenty-First Century the only account of the modern day expedition published to date. Come along on this exciting adventure as he shares what it was like to relive this historic and unforgettable event.
