9781617130861: Grateful Dead FAQ: All That's Left to Know About the Greatest Jam Band in History (FAQ Series)

Ever wondered why the Grateful Dead once added a modern classical composer to the ranks? Or how they pioneered the "double live" rock album concept? Or what a final studio album by the Dead would have been like? These questions and more are answered in The Grateful Dead FAQ. Subtitled "All That's Left to Know About the Greatest Jam Band in History," the book explores subjects that Deadheads have long discussed on message boards and blogs. In all, it's comprised of 130,000 words and 39 chapters in which author Tony Sclafani investigates unexplored terrain but also includes basics for beginners. The Grateful Dead rose out of San Francisco's 1960s underground rock scene blending strains of rock folk, classical, and blues, and boldly advocating the use of drugs for the purposes of mind expansion. The book takes a look at the band's rise to prominence, their studio albums, bootleg recordings, and sociological significance. Chapters are also included about the Dick's Pick's series, David Lemieux's archiving activities, and the band's appearances at the Monterey Pop and Woodstock festivals. Sclafani thoroughly examines the band's impact on rock music and pop culture, explaining how the Dead influenced and drew from outside sources. The Grateful Dead FAQ is a roadmap into the magical, sometimes bumpy, yet always exhilarating world of one of the most unique groups that rock music ever produced.

Review:

"For those fans out there who want to really dive deep into the reality and nitty-gritty of everything there is to know about this historical musical collaboration, you can't get much better than this." - Seattle Post-Intelligencer

"Sclafani offers plenty for well-read Deadheads and still more for normal folks who want to know more...FAQ is jamband-packed with with little-known facts and trivia that will enlighten even the greyest of Deadheads." - Hittin' the Note

"Longtime music journalist Tony Sclafani engagingly breaks it all down in 39 easy-to-digest chapters, each packed with bite-sized nuggets." - Chico News & Review

"Sclafani does an obsessively nice job of filling in the basics for newcomers while delving deep enough into biographies, discographies, and theoretical discographies (an excellent overview of an unreleased album's virtual tracklist) to make get into Deadheads' heads." - Rocktober Reviews

"Kudos to the author of Grateful Dead FAQ for not indulging in the fan-boy mentality that afflicted similar titles;Tony Sclafani refuses to drone, preferring to maintain a light touch in keeping with the instrumental approach of the band at hand." - Glide Magazine

"It's like a Wiki-Dead-a-Pedia." - BlogCritics

"This is a wonderfully researched book that tells the story of one of the most iconic rock bands of all time. That the author has been able to dig deep and find new facts on a band that has been chronicled for decades now is a testament to his dedication and skill." - Curled Up With a Good Book

"The Grateful Dead FAQ really does deliver all that's left to know about the group, as far as I can tell. Tony Sclafani has come up with so many fascinating insights about this cultural institution that I found the book to be a joy to read. The Grateful Dead FAQ takes the  good old Grateful Dead story to a whole other level, and is recommended." - Blinded By Sound

Book Description Hal Leonard Corporation. Paperback. Book Condition: new. BRAND NEW, Grateful Dead FAQ: All That's Left to Know About the Greatest Jam Band in History, Tony Sclafani, The Grateful Dead rose out of San Francisco's '60s underground rock scene with an unprecedented sound and image. Its members, steeped in rock, folk, classical, and blues; their instrumental prowess; and their refusal to bow to commercial conventions helped originate jam band music. Unapologetic in its advocacy of drug use as a means toward mind expansion, the Dead helped catapult psychedelic music. After performing at the Monterey International Pop Festival and Woodstock, the group became iconic without ever scoring a hit single. A large, devoted fan base - Deadheads - began to follow the band everywhere. The group suffered a tragedy when bandleader Jerry Garcia slipped into a coma in 1986, but returned the next year with a top-selling album and surprise hit single, Touch of Grey. By 1993, the Dead was the top-grossing live act in the United States. The band ended when Garcia died in 1995, but the music lives on with a stream of live releases. In Grateful Dead FAQ, Tony Sclafani examines the band's impact and influence on rock music and pop culture. This book ventures into unexplored areas and features a host of rare images, making it a must-have for both Deadheads and casual fans. Bookseller Inventory # B9781617130861
