The first thing I noticed about this book is that it is spiral bound, and so has been produced with the intention that it can be used for reference whilst sewing. It is packed full of information and designs, containing 16 all over quilting patterns that are broken down to create 155 different block, sashing and border designs. Each one is clearly illustrated, so even a beginner can learn how to approach a simple block, and fill it with what looks like a complex quilting design. This is a book I would buy not only for beginners, but for friends with more quilting experience as it both informs and inspires you to try new things in your approach to free-motion quilting, The dedication sums up the book nicely by saying, 'To everyone who has ever looked at a quilt top and wondered where to begin.' If you are considering free=motion quilting then this is an ideal book to add to your sewing library. (Elizabeth Betts Popular Patchwork, December 2015)
Take the guesswork out of free-motion quilting with 155 ideas, each hand-picked for a specific space on a quilt. Free-Motion Quilting Idea Book by Amanda Murphy pairs unique free-motion designs with 30 well-loved quilt blocks. Pick and choose elements from each chapter (borders, sashing, motifs, and more) for an artful finish! (McCall's Quilting, January/February 2016)
After you put so much time and effort into design and piecing a quilt top it's OK to look at the finished work and think, “Now, how in the world am I going to quilt this?!” That's where Amanda Murphy comes in. For those free-motion on our own sewing machines or on a longarm, Amanda has created more than 150 block ideas to get your quilting started. The small book feels more like a workbook, guiding you through a creative brainstorm to figure out what works best for your quilt top. All the well-known quilt block designs are included, from log cabins to half-square triangles. As someone who is newer to longarm quilting, this book has become a great resource for helping me finish my quilting projects. (Lish Dorset lishdorset.com, 12/8/15)
These are purely designs, there are no instructions for quilting techniques. All the designs were sewn on a domestic machine but they could be used on a longarm machine. The important rule is ‘Always stitch in the ditch over the entire quilt first'. A series of very small diagrams show all-over designs. Black lines show the progression from the first stages but no starting or finishing points are indicated. 30 blocks are each heavily quilted in several different styles, with stage by stage diagrams. There are also designs for sashing and borders. (British Patchwork & Quilting, March 2016)
