As a young girl growing up in Santa Clara Valley, Marisa could see the valley changing and what impact it had on her family. Her brother was called to the Viet Nam war and her mother died when she was a little girl. She viewed money as a way out of what she perceived to be an impoverished life. The evening fog hadn’t rolled in yet and the stars were twinkling as if providing a night-light for the heavens above. She played with the pills in her pocket, rolling them around her fingertips. She couldn’t believe she’d been thinking of taking them and calling it a day. Then anger filled her body. Why had God taken away her mother, then her brother? One by one, her family was disappearing. Who would be next? What more pain had God in store for her? What more despair was waiting for her down the road? She decided not to wait around to find out. Swallowing the pills would be the hard part, dying would be easy. The once brilliant stars faded as her vision blurred. The last thing she remembered was a dream she had when she was little, something about a kingdom and she was a queen, queen of something, silicon something.
