9781619022393: The Quiet Streets of Winslow

When the murdered body of a young woman is found in a river wash in Black Canyon City, Arizona, Deputy Sheriff Sam Rush begins an investigation that leads deeper and deeper into the mystery of her death and the psychological mystery of identity. Nate Aspenall, with whom the young woman had been involved, is forced to confront the facts of her life and his own, and what he may have become with her. Sam Rush confronts the degree to which he is hindered by his assumptions about the Aspenall family, and by the knowledge of his own isolation. And Travis Aspenall, Nate’s fourteen-year-old stepbrother, must come to grips with what love and sex do to people, what choices they make when threatened with loss, and how to figure out what you’re left with when what you thought you knew and trusted has been thrown into question.

As the investigation takes Sam north to Winslow and Holbrook and brings Nate home, temporarily, to Black Canyon City, solving the mystery becomes more complicated. Additional suspects emerge. Nobody tells the truth. The victim’s haphazard life was dangerous, and her relationship with Nate anything but straight-forward. As for Nate, his time in Black Canyon City is running out. His family is no longer certain of his innocence. In the midst of this, Travis struggles to grow up.

Set in the gorgeous setting of Winslow, Arizona where the place becomes a fully realized character in this beautiful story Judy Troy offers a murder mystery infused with inter-woven love stories and unforgettable voices, a masterful return for this wonderful writer.

From the Author:

Unlike my previous novels, THE QUIET STREETS OF WINSLOW is a mystery, written in the first person, with multiple narrators: the deputy sheriff, the boyfriend of the dead girl, and the boyfriend's younger halfbrother. What I had first was the setting Black Canyon City, a small, northern Arizona town near the Weaver Mountains. Parts of the novel take place in Chino Valley and in Winslow as well.

The challenge was finding a compelling voice and situation with which to begin. I thought but wasn't certain it would be a young male, but not until I came up with the beginning did I realize that the novel would have multiple points of view. The story seemed to require it.

Sunrise is when what has gone on in the night is revealed; that was in my mind as I wrote the first sentence. From the start I gave as many specific, intertwining details as possible: the dead girl, who looks familiar to the halfbrother who finds her; Deputy Sheriff Sam Rush, who has long been a friend of the family; and the half brother, Travis, who has a girlfriend of his own, so that he's acquiring firsthand knowledge of love and loss.

Halfway through writing the novel I wasn't sure who had murdered the girl and felt I was heading in the wrong direction. I took a break, working on something else, and in October of that year I flew to Albuquerque and drove from Sante Fe to Winslow. As I looked at the landscape I started thinking about the mystery, and by the time I arrived I had most of the plot worked out. The following morning I began working on the book again. I wrote most of the novel at home, but parts of it were written in Winslow; in Navarre, Florida, near the Gulf; in a house on Lake Michigan; and in airports and airplanes--public spaces that seem, for some reason, conducive to writing.

Throughout the novel I went as deeply into the characters as I could, looking for what it is to be human, with our lives marked as they are by birth and death, yet limitless within those borders. And I tried to discover what separates us, sometimes tragically, from each other and from ourselves.
