Machu Picchu is often called the Lost City of the Inca. Hidden by thick forest plants high in the Andes Mountains of South America, the Inca city lay abandoned for nearly 400 years.

These new titles in the Virtual Field Trip series don’t actually use a you-are-there point of view, but they do offer plenty of information. Building, architecture, geography, history, science—each book covers it all in an overview of one monumental world structure. The books follow the same basic pattern: general information about the structure, key facts about its modern-day location, the history of its construction, its outer and inner features, how it incorporates mathematic or aesthetic ideas, the scientific principles at work in it, the individuals and groups involved in the building, similar structures around the world, an activity page, and a quiz. There is some variation. Machu Picchu replaces the “Outside” and “Inside” sections with “The Agricultural Sector” and “The Urban Sector.” Overall, these books seem to have found a winning formula.
