In this classic and timeless tragedy, King Lear descends into madness after foolishly disposing of his estate between two of his three daughters, a decision that will bring tragic consequences for all. The play is based on the legend of Leir of Britain, a mythological pre-Roman Celtic king. It has been widely adapted for the stage and motion pictures and the role of King Lear has been coveted and played by many of the world’s most accomplished actors. The play was written between 1603 and 1606 and later revised. King Lear is particularly noted for its probing observations on the nature of human suffering and kinship. The great George Bernard Shaw once stated that no one will ever write a better tragedy than King Lear.

William Shakespeare (baptized 1564 - 1616) was an English poet and playwright, widely regarded as the greatest writer in the English language as well as the world’s pre-eminent dramatist. His works, including some collaborations, consist of about 38 plays, 154 sonnets, two long narrative poems, two epitaphs on a man named John Combe, one epitaph on Elias James, and several other poems. His plays have been translated into every major living language and are performed more often than those of any other playwright. Shakespeare produced most of his known work between 1589 and 1613. His early plays were mainly comedies and histories. Shakespeare then wrote mainly tragedies until about 1608, including Hamlet, King Lear, Othello, and Macbeth, considered some of the finest works in the English language. In his last phase, he wrote tragicomedies, also known as romances, and collaborated with other playwrights.
