About the Author

Chad Bowers is a comics writer and creator from South Carolina. With cowriter and pal Chris Sims and artist Scott Kowalchuk, he created the Yalsa–nominated original graphic novel Down, Set, Fight! for Oni-Lion Forge. With Sims, Chad’s other credits include the fan-favorite Marvel Comics series X-Men ‘92, Infinity Wars: Sleepwalker, Guardians of the Galaxy: Monsters Unleashed, and the best-selling original graphic novel Deadpool: Bad Blood. He’s also written and produced comics for PBS, Image Comics, IDW Publishing, Dynamite Entertainment, and BOOM! studios. After years of being encouraged by his high school’s coaching staff to join the football team, Chad played exactly two games before all agreed maybe he’d be better off pursuing his passion for making comics. No mascots were injured in either game.

 

Chris Sims is an award-winning writer and podcaster from South Carolina, where he met Chad Bowers while working at a comic book store. He currently lives in Minneapolis, where the winters do go on for quite some time, with his wife, AC, and his dog, Boberry Biscuit Sullivan-Sims, who is both the best little puppy on Earth and a goblin sent from Hell to punish mankind for their hubris.

Scott Kowalchuk is a Toronto-based illustrator and graphic designer with over ten years experience. In that time he has produced work for DC Comics, Atari, Image Comics, Oni Press, and many more.

Fight! throws a critical haymaker as it tells the story of “Fearless” Chuck Fairlane, a once famous football star turned high-school coach. Thrown out of football because he clocked a beloved mascot in the kisser, Chuck is now being mysteriously attacked by mascots left and right. Despite the book’s ridiculous and often sidesplitting premise, writers Bowers and Sims sneak in surprisingly heartfelt story beats as Chuck knocks fuzzy teeth out of a mascot’s forever grin. Kowalchuk’s big art is as loud as it is detailed, and his blocky cartooning sets the perfect tone, a striking balance between fresh and nostalgic. For a change, this one’s not a part of a series, and the complete story will be a rabbit punch to many unsuspecting readers when they turn the final pages. With nothing else like it on the shelves, this title is playing on its own field. Pad up; it packs a wallop. Grades 9-12. --Ben Spanner
