Mark D. Ogletree served an LDS
mission from 1982 to 1984 in Seattle,
Washington. He earned a bachelor of
arts degree in 1987 from Brigham Young
University; a master of arts in 1990 in
educational psychology from Northern
Arizona University; a master of arts
in mental health counseling in 1994
from Northern Arizona University; and
a PhD in 2000 in family and human
development from Utah State University.
Dr. Ogletree taught in the Church
Educational System for twenty-one years.
He worked as a seminary instructor and principal, an institute instructor,
and finally as director of the Institute of Religion in Dallas, Texas. In
2010, Mark accepted a position at Brigham Young University as an
associate professor in the Department of Church History and Doctrine.
He teaches courses on preparing for marriage and teachings of the living
Mark has also worked in private practice for the past twenty years as
a marriage and family therapist. Currently, he runs a part-time practice in

In the Church, Mark has served most of his life in the young men's
organization. He has also served on a stake high council and as a bishop
in the McKinney Texas Stake. He was recently called as the bishop of the
Sherwood Hills Ward in Provo, Utah.
Mark is married to the former Janie Cook, and they are the parents
of eight children all boys except for seven. Mark and Janie also enjoy
five grandchildren. In addition to church activities, he enjoys playing
racquetball, basketball, softball, and golf; writing; and remodeling his
