9781621310525: History of Urban Planning and Design

History of Urban Planning and Design is a comprehensive introduction to the historical evolution—from antiquity to the present—of the city and the built environment. It considers the forces that influence the city’s form and content and explores the wide variety of city designs and built forms that have evolved throughout history. This reader incorporates both Western and non-Western planning traditions and highlights attributes of successful and unsuccessful urban planning, design, and architecture. It introduces the reader to fundamental urban design and architectural principles and their evolution over time, and is an ideal text for students of architecture, urban design, urban planning, and urban history.

History of Urban Planning and Design demonstrates that cities are more than their physical attributes. Through the presentation of scholarship from many of the seminal voices in the field, the collection presents the relationship between the physical design of the city and larger social, environmental, cultural, economic, technological, and political systems. This text includes an appendix containing a list of relevant, internet-based research resources.
