Angelina Jolie could have settled for becoming an Academy Award-winning actress. She could have been pleased enough portraying the villain-turned-heroine of Disney's smash film Maleficent. She could be quite happy being the mother of a large family she shares with her husband, actor Brad Pitt. But after a trip to Cambodia, Jolie was struck by the poverty she witnessed there, and decided to do something about it. For over a decade since, she has carried out dozens of field missions all around the globe. Jolie was named a United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees Goodwill Ambassador. She's funded schools, orphanages, and other centers dedicated to helping people in crisis. Discover how she encourages others to take action through web sites, newspaper ads, and charities, and see why this actor is even more magnificent than you might have imagined.

From School Library Journal:

Gr 4-7-The subject matter will make these titles appealing to a wide range of readers. Each of the narratives highlights how the individual in question overcame early obstacles: Mo'ne Davis excelled in a sport dominated by boys, Angelina Jolie became a successful actress despite being mocked for her appearance as a teen, and Ed Sheeran endured homelessness in pursuit of his music career. The illustrations are consistently strong, including intriguing photos of several figures as young children as well as more recent shots. Back matter is also excellent. All of the books include extensive lists of works consulted, and Ed Sheeran has endnotes. At times, the writing is clunky. Sentences are brief and vocabulary simple, though text blocks are often long and unbroken. VERDICT Good research materials for intermediate readers looking for a little more depth than a more strictly hi-lo title.α(c) Copyright 2011.
