Have you ever worked for a person that made you hate to go to work everyday? Almost everyone has had this experience. My book is about how not to be that BossHole who sucks the life, energy and enthusiasm out of his team. I was fortunate when I graduated from Pharmacy School to go right to work for a great boss at a great company. I thought I would work there my entire career. Then the changes started as the company was sold and new regimes took over three times in five years. I saw first hand the impact a bad leader can have on the energy and enthusiasm I put in to my job. I witnessed the demoralizing impact of a tyrannical knucklehead, actually a series of them, in undermining the success of the organization.
Over the ensuing years I have worked for some great bosses, some hideous ones, and been the boss of hundreds of employees. And along the way I learned how to get my team to achieve great things.
I have also been a credentialed teacher and educator since 1977. So I have learned a thing or two about teaching people what they need to know. And the reality is that telling inspirational stories is fine, but real people need practical guidance of how to turn theory in to action. My book is designed to be read in a few days and used as a reference for ever.
I spell out in each chapter three things that you can do to actually begin acting like a leader and improve your ability as a manager. And I use examples from my retail pharmacy management experience as well as my long career as a fastpitch softball coach and lifetime baseball fan to put the stories in context where you can see the principles applied to real situations. And then I provide an action steps guide at the end that provides an At A Glance Summary of the major points of each chapter for reference.
As a College Professor I have written book chapters and articles on management and leadership based on these same experiences but by its very nature academic writing has to be formal and a bit sterile.
