Baby Boomers. Gazillions of us. I am a card carrying member. We are different than other generations in numbers, in ages and in types. Our parents were fruitful and we multiplied. The children of Baby Boomers are busy multiplying now, as we have been exponential like no other generation by virtue of our numbers. We are spread far and wide and are busy designing - no, redesigning Mid-Life.
We seem to be more ambitious and have more energy than most of our predecessors. We have accomplished more as a whole, and therefore some are choosing to transition into this stage of life a tad early. Others are not even considering this thing called Mid-Life. More are willing to re-define it while continuing to go, live, love and enjoy life so much more. We seem to have a different bar we are reaching for, with a different calculation for "how much" to relax, work, play and achieve.
Seven to ten thousand baby boomers in the U.S. turn sixty-five every day. Ours is a demographic that has been said to have changed virtually every stage of life that it has been through. This population is also known as the strike generation, and noted for boldly saying not to trust anyone over the age of 30! Now it is a growing demographic of people living past 90 and changing the parameters of how we grow older. The era of minivans has taken the leading edge in computers, iPods and E readers, and so much more.
We often decide again and again to reinvent ourselves. The agenda is not necessarily to make more money, although that often happens either on purpose or incidental to doing what we love to do. Placing more emphasis and focus on how much more we can do with our longer and longer lives excites us. Mid-Life is undefinable with any accuracy as it is fluid, discretionary, subjective, unqualified, and cannot be determined for us. No one can really impose a pace on our individualized lifestyles. There are so many more than one right way, with no pigeon holes, cookie cutters or molds. Create, create, and create, as much as desired. Tired? Rest. Energized? Do more. You choose. Then choose again and again
