A young man from an impoverished family steps into the greater world of the public school system after having spent eight years in a shuttered and rigid parochial school environment. Brought up with old fashioned Southern values and an Irish heritage, the many qualities of his character are complemented by extreme naiveté. When his exceptional physical fitness gives him an opportunity to play football, he is surprised that he also becomes highly attractive to the opposite sex...and finds that he is ill-prepared for the new social structure he is thrust into. Set in the late 60's in the American Southwest, the fictional account of a young man's transition into a world different to that in which he was raised is set in a time of great social change in America: the Vietnam Conflict, the Sexual Revolution, the Hippie Movement, Women's Liberation, and the drugs that pervaded the country.
