Eager to become kings themselves and wary of how well-liked Syv has become by the citizens, Syv’s brothers send him on a dangerous quest to find the long-lost magical crown that once belonged to their royal ancestor, the Eldking. Legend says that the snowcat who finds the crown will break the curse on their land and bring great honor to the family. But failure could mark Syv with three black stripes, and he’d be banished forever.

Along his journey, Syv will face dangerous beasts, dark powers, and the ever-lurking sand foxes—sworn enemies to the snowcats. But when Syv discovers the truth about the legend of the Eldking and his magical crown, he’ll have to learn the new meaning of honor and find another way to break the curse.

About the Author

Dina Norlund was an artist who liked to dabble in all things creative. Everything from painting, storytelling, sculptures, crafting, and designing, she probably tried it all at one point in her life. She even managed to focus on one thing long enough to write, illustrate, and finish a comic project or two. Dina liked to wander the lush forests of Norway, taking inspiration from the culture and folklore when writing and illustrating her stories. Though Dina tragically passed away in February 2023 at only twenty-seven years old, she believed in rebirth through nature. Her spirit lives on in those she loved and inspired. You might even be able to still find her in those lush Norwegian forests―perhaps beneath a yellow gingko tree―where her soul is immersed in nature and she's daydreaming her next magical adventure.

Gr 3-6-In a fantasy kingdom ruled by leonine snowcats, a young snowcat prince named Syv embarks on a quest to find his ancestor's mythical crown and break the curse gripping their land. Goaded into the journey by his older brothers, who hope to remove the popular young prince from the public eye, Syv sets out on a trek and meets Kit, a red-haired human girl who is more than she appears to be. The story is a classic hero's journey folktale, with adventure and plot twists to keep the reader's interest. The artwork is the big star here, with luminous blues, reds, pinks, and golds throughout. The story takes inspiration from Disney, manga, and fairy tales, making this a smart choice for graphic novel collections. VERDICT A self-contained adventure with high middle grade appeal, and a very good choice for the graphic novel shelves, particularly where readers enjoy fantasy.-Rosemary Kiladitisα(c) Copyright 2011.
