About the Authors

Award-winning author Jennifer Keats Curtis is frequently found among students and teachers, talking about literacy and conservation. Laura Jacques is an award-winning artist whose illustrations for children's books and educational products focus on wildlife, nature, and environmental awareness.

Phyllis was preschool age when she began drawing and painting pictures of animals. Her father would bring home from his lab large piles of used computer paper for her. One side had equations on it, the other side was blank and perfect for drawing on. She still uses the drafting table that he gave her for her eleventh birthday. Phyllis grew up in Rockville, Maryland in a house that had a creek running through the back yard. She spent many hours in that creek finding the amphibians, crustaceans and fish that lived there. Her mother was a biologist who helped her appreciate the world of plants and animals. Because of her parents, Phyllis grew up thinking all kitchens had a microscope on the table! Phyllis received her Bachelors of Fine Art Degree in illustration from Virginia Commonwealth University. She received her Masters of Fine Art Degree in illustration from Academy of Art University in San Francisco. Phyllis has illustrated nonfiction books about the natural world such as Teeth and Mary Anning Fossil Hunter. Phyllis also illustrates for children's magazines, wayside signs and other educational material. She has worked for the Forest Service, the Department of Interior and the Fairfax Virginia Park Authority. Phyllis digitally paints illustrations for books and magazines and she creates oil paintings that are sold through McBride Gallery in Annapolis, Maryland. Annapolis is Phyllis' home where she lives with her husband, two sons and two dogs. She is near the Chesapeake Bay where she enjoys watching and hearing the wildlife that surrounds the area.
