Louise Parker was in a terrible bind. Her husband had been killed riding as a guard for the stagecoach. She was left to take care of their two small children. She couldn’t work and take care of them, too. She was left to find a husband as a Desperate Mother in a Mail Order Bride Column the Denver newspaper was running about widows whose husbands had died in the War Between the States.
Ox Humphrey had grown up in an orphanage. He had always lived alone until he had adopted his son Alex a few years ago. He loved him and loved that he made them a family. He read about the Desperate Mother in the newspaper. He hated to read about how she had no one to help her or nowhere to go. He wrote back at once telling her that he would marry her and take care of her children and her. Louise cried that she had someone who would help take care of her children. She made arrangements to move to Cedar Creek to marry Ox.
Ox and Alex started getting ready for Louise and her children to move with them, it was going to be a huge change for them. But other changes were coming to Cedar Creek. A Mexican cartel was taking over one of the saloons in town…Rose, one of their whores, was making plans to leave the saloon and Carlos Garcia one way or the other. Two new schoolteachers were coming to Cedar Creek to work, as well as two new deputies. So many new people, some of them would be good for the town, and some of them would cause trouble for Louise and Ox. Louise was determined that Ox would never be sorry that he had sent for her and her children to give them a new home.
