Elliot Jones is the golden boy of El Paso advertising—sharp, generous, and loyal—until a late-night attempt to set things right explodes into violence. He’s ambushed outside his office and left dying in the snow, a cryptic silver medallion is found close to his body. The medallion points to the “Free-Landers,” a ruthless, secretive syndicate where American business power and South American cartel money meet.
Gene Martine, Elliot’s boss and closest friend, refuses to let the police—or the press—write the ending. With Detective Stanton on his heels and danger closing in, Gene chases the truth from sleek agency conference rooms to the desert of Juárez, Mexico, and into the rugged mountains of southern New Mexico. Each answer unspools another betrayal: a guarded confession from Elliot’s widow, a janitorial “trade” that isn’t what it seems, a security guard silenced before he can talk, and the mysterious woman whose plea for help set everything in motion.
