Dr. James Polakof, PhD is a medical consultant, nutritionist, and author dedicated to providing medical knowledge to patients. Having received his doctorate in nutrition, his engagement with thousands of people seeking medical advice led him to 35 years of medical marketing and sales. This allowed Dr. Polakof to create over 700 medical education programs for multiple medical fields, including plastic surgery. Besides his programs, he went on to write and host a mini-series with Erin O’Brien, produce two award-winning documentaries, and create his sensational podcast, Discovering New Horizons. Dr. Polakof currently lives in Pine Hurst, North Carolina.
Dr. Robert Hardesty is a plastic surgeon and medical director known for over 10,000 operations in his 30-year career. Receiving his education at the University of Pittsburgh and Washington University in St. Louis, he started the first integrated training program for future cosmetic surgeons at his alma mater, Loma Linda University, School of Matter. Dr. Hardesty then went on to perform many successful and satisfactory plastic surgeries before opening his medical spa, Imagine Plastic Surgery, in 2003. The Real You, Only Better will be his debut book. Former accolades include the Presidency of the California Society of Plastic Surgery and the Chairman of the Plastic Surgery Research Council. Dr. Hardesty continues leading his team at their surgery clinic in San Bernadino, California.
The post-war optimism of the 1950s produced Doris Day and Debbie Reynolds, when being “sweet” and perky was considered pretty. And then in the 1960s, there was more concern with social protest and idealism than with feminine decorations. This created a place for slender, unshapely models such as “Twiggy,” who was a counter-culture icon known for her thin build.
Today, what society defines as beautiful in a woman is an exaggerated hourglass: thin waist and legs, a large butt, and big breasts. (FYI: As for men, they are judged by muscle tone, shape, hairy or hairless chests, and other masculine characteristics.)
Society shapes us in many ways, possibly more than we realize—from our interactions, to our personal development, to others’ perception of our bodies as a reflection of self-worth.
We are social beings. Genetically, we rely on one another for the survival of humanity. That primal connection makes our interactions physiologically and psychologically important. It’s not surprising that how society perceives us affects us on many levels. And it’s partly how society perceives our bodies that is of concern. So, what does this involve?
How we look has possibly never held as much societal importance or reflected so significantly on our perceived self-worth. Beauty standards say that physical attractiveness is more important than a woman’s other characteristics. Society in general tells so many women that they are not enough, that the way they exist in this world is not beautiful, that they aren’t perfect. That’s not okay.
According to Psychology Today, 56 percent of women say they are dissatisfied with their physical appearance, many focusing on body weight in particular. In addition, many manipulated images showcased on Instagram or Snapchat fill this inevitable void.
It’s little wonder that so many are turning to plastic surgery in hopes of becoming more compatible with today’s standards of beauty. One young woman has a great idea: “Instead of giving in to the norm, we as women should put up a bigger fight against unrealistic beauty standards to empower the beauty, independence, and diversity of every individual. Taking time away from social media helps me to better combat a negative self-image. It’s utterly impossible to celebrate my own unique beauty while the world feeds me a portrayal of what my physical appearance should look like.”
