“Talking Mort Walker: A Life in Comics is a major accomplishment." -Brian Walker (from the Foreword). Mort Walker is best known for his comic strips Beetle Bailey and Hi & Lois, but in fact he was constantly creating new strips and projects. He described himself as a “human inventing machine” and famously quipped “Seven days without laughter makes one weak.” Mort was a child prodigy who was endlessly enthusiastic about comics. He was selling work by age 12, editorial designer at Hallmark by 18, humor mag editor in college, top magazine cartoonist and syndicated creator of Beetle by 27. He loved comics and constantly fought to elevate the form, whether through battles over rights and contracts, leading the NCS, launching US postage stamps, lending his talents to causes, or through his persistent dream to see a major comic museum thrive in the States. Mort was also a great supporter of young cartoonists, sponsored new members in the NCS (he sponsored Charles Schulz), and he welcomed all into his life with a friendly, Huckleberry Hound voice and a kind heart that seemed to say “the more the merrier.” He loved the laughs, the wisecracks, but he could also listen and evolve when needed. Talking Mort Walker: A Life in Comics takes readers on a journey through Walker’s career between 1935-2018, where over 700 pages of rare interviews, articles, letters, unpublished photographs, and drawings reveal insights about the child prodigy who grew up to become the Dean of American cartooning. In this 83-year collection of artifacts, Walker reveals his passion and experienced views on the craft, business and history of cartoon art. Talking Mort Walker: A Life in Comics is a touchstone for comic scholars, fans, and budding cartoonists. Many people were touched by Walker’s career and this book also includes many tributes that followed his passing by talents such as Jim Davis (Garfield), Patrick McDonnell (Mutts), Jeannie Schulz (Charles Schulz Museum), Lynn Johnston (For Better or For Worse), Jenny Robb (Billy Ireland Cartoon Library & Museum), Chance Browne (Hi and Lois), R.C. Harvey, Rick Marschall, among others. Author Jason Whiton is a writer, artist, educator, and the creator of Spy Vibe, a website devoted to design and pop culture. His work as a screenwriter and filmmaker has been recognized by the Nicholl Fellowships (Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences), PBS, Sundance, and other major film festivals. Whiton’s other publications include the upcoming book, Spy Vibe, Mort Walker Conversations, and contributions to Avengerworld: The Avengers in Our Lives, Rolling Stone, USA Weekend, Photographer's Forum Annual, among others.
