Not since School House Rock has it been more fun to learn about lawmaking!
There Ought to Be a Law follows Eliza and Martin on their day of adventure at the State Capitol as the mother, a legislator, takes them through the journey for a bill to become a law.
Colorful and energetic, the story is filled with memorable characters, like Officer Davis, the friendly security person, and Benjamin, a Legislative Assistant. This book tackles the difficult task of teaching your child the 12 steps to pass a law in a way that is easy to understand. In the vivid narrative, the book also educates about different cultures, races, and people, building on a foundation of curiosity and inclusivity.
Get into Martin and Eliza’s shoes as they pass an anti-bullying law with a free ice-cream amendment to top it off.

What are others saying?
“The colorful illustrations and fun-filled dialogue between the children and their guides at the state capitol make this an informative and interesting read.… a marvelous book for young readers to teach them about lawmaking … a great learning tool.”
--"Reader's Favorite" 5-Star Medallion Award
This is a children’s book for all ages. Here are beautiful illustrations, a fun story, and a glossary of important words. I would enthusiastically support Eliza and Martin’s anti-bullying and free ice cream bill in the general assembly. Can’t wait to share it with my students, colleagues, friends, and family!
-- Karen Peters, Elementary educator in California, North Carolina, Washington D.C., and Atlanta.
“As a legislator, I can’t think of anything better than this book to explain to youth how laws are made. What a wonderful contribution to the education of our youth who are our future!”
-- Don Davis, North Carolina State Senator
I loved the book! I wish I’d had access to this book “back in the day” when I was teaching fourth grade social studies and needed a more realistic way to explain laws and legislative processes. The day ends in a long-awaited trip to get ice cream, and the reader can almost taste the deliciousness of the treat along with the fun of learning. The mixture of messages against bullying makes for some subtle learning about the negative effects of bullying for children.
-- Dr. Patricia Anderson, Professor of Elementary Education, East Carolina University
A GREAT GIFT FOR THE HOME, CLASSROOM OR HOMESCHOOLING.
