Ric Berman researches, writes and speaks on eighteenth and nineteenth-century English, Irish and American freemasonry. A Fellow of the Royal Historical Society, he is the author of numerous journal articles and books, and has delivered keynote lectures across the globe. Ric holds an MA and PhD from from the University of Cambridge and the University of Exeter, respectively, and undertook post-doctoral research at the University of Oxford's Modern European History Research Centre. A freemason for over forty years and twice a Prestonian Lecturer, Ric holds Grand Rank in the United Grand Lodge of England and is a Past Master of three English Lodges including Quatuor Coronati, the premier lodge of Masonic research. He is also an American freemason, a member and honorary member of lodges in five states, a Blue Friar, and a Fellow of the Philalethes Society. He was the Anson Jones lecturer for the Texas Lodge of Research in 2023. Born in London, Ric lives in rural Oxfordshire.
The impact of the Grand Lodge of Ireland and of Irish freemasonry extended beyond, indeed, far beyond the island of its birth. This is seen clearly in the development of 'Antients' freemasonry which was established by London's expatriate Irish community in the mid-eighteenth century. More inclusive and mutually supportive, Antients freemasonry was not only shipped back to Ireland but transported across Britain's burgeoning Empire, particularly North America, where it was carried by migration, trade and the regiments of the British Army. Antients freemasonry was also absorbed into mainstream English freemasonry following the union in 1813 of the original Grand Lodge of England (the Moderns) and the Antients Grand Lodge to form the United Grand Lodge of England. The 2024 Prestonian Lecture recognises the seminal roles that the Grand Lodge of Ireland, the London Irish and Antients freemasonry have played in the transmission of Masonic and Enlightenment ideas across the globe. The Lecture also marks the tercentenary in 2025 of the Grand Lodge of Ireland.
