In the plains beyond Marengo, at 5 o’clock on 14th June 1800, Napoleon’s army and career were in tatters. His elite Consular Guard were either dead or prisoners and the remnants of his exhausted troops were in full flight. Bonaparte’s Consular power had always depended on securing a victory. And now, he had just witnessed his own army, the army of Reserve, suffer a crushing defeat at the hands of the Austrians.
Back in Paris, his Guards and supporters were being challenged by anti-Bonapartist troops. Republican rivals did not expect his regime to survive the year.
Yet against all the odds, Bonaparte was able to turn the battle against his enemies. Within the hour, he would turn almost-complete defeat into victory. In so doing, he would also consolidate his power as First Consul of the Republic; and his control of Western Europe.
