When I was 21, my desire to travel became so great that I sold everything I had (which wasn't much), bought an old motorcycle in London, and took off on the adventure of a lifetime, ending up in Tunisia. I'm afraid that did if for me. Since then I've explored about sixty countries. I love adventure travel, the more exotic the better; eco-tourism, from deserts to rain forests; and islands, preferably in the tropics. I greatly prefer living abroad, too; the sense of freedom is priceless. Recently I spent four wonderful years in the Canary Islands, at the base of the tallest mountain in the Atlantic, and currently inhabit the rocky coast of Scotland. I've also lived briefly in Japan. The most memorable places have been the ones I've covered for Lonely Planet, simply because you end up knowing them better than your own backyard. I?ve spent a month roaming across northern Morocco, six weeks on a marathon journey throughout much of Madagascar, and three weeks exploring the garden isle of Kaua'i. Next stop: Borneo. In all this I have learned one simple rule: always make life's essential decisions from the perspective of an elderly person sitting in a rocking chair on a porch. Because some day that will be you.
"From making an itinerary to see the most to blue sidebars of information and keys to island culture, this covers the 'best' of the tourist and hidden attractions of the island, and makes for the perfect destination travelplanner." (Midwest Book Review)
