Without the details there could be no larger picture. May Gibbs became one of Australia's most well-known and loved illustrators. Her gumnut babies have been adored by generations of children. For the first time her early life and artistic career are explored in detail. She traveled to England in a quest to develop as an artist and became an early supporter of the suffragettes. Her early paintings of wildflowers led her to discover the limitations of being a woman artist and she discovered that working hard to develop a sustaining commercial career in art was not going to be easy. One of the few women to become a commercial success, she did so by turning to fantasy and children's illustration. This is a fascinating illustrated biography of a talented artist, complete with beautiful reproductions of May Gibbs' work throughout.

About the Author:

Robert Holden was the curator of The Museum of Childhood, he has written numerous books on artists and those whose focus has been illustrating for children.

Review:

"Richly illustrated with her drawings, portraiture, watercolours, sketches, cartoons and postcards, this book surprises and delights. It also ensures Gibbs is more than folklore." Herald Sun "This is a gorgeously illustrated biography; the quality and range of Gibbs's reproduced artworks are impressive: from watercolour landscapes, portraits, postcards and pictorial mementos to prize-winning pictures of wildflowers, cartoons and sketches. But the value of this book does not lie only in its attempts to colour in the hazy outlines of the young Gibbs; it also opens a window on to the sociopolitical and cultural history of early 20th century Australia." Thuy On, Weekend Australian, Review "A quality production with an olde world charm you would expect from anything associated with this remarkable woman." Manly Daily
