This book is loosely based on events that occurred in the beautiful Dandenong Ranges, during the early 1990s, although some details are fictional. The story focuses on the local Council's efforts to preserve native flora and fauna, especially the legendary lyrebird, famed for its brilliant ability to mimic a wide range of sounds. Two factions exist, one being pro-conservation, and the other more supportive of development, putting people above wild-life. One character plans an aboriginal heritage centre in the Shire, increasing tensions. Council introduced a controversial Animal By-Law to control domestic cats, which were to be locked inside overnight, causing conflict. Multiple murders throw a sinister angle on the story, creating a quandary for police.
