9781770097704: Saracen at the Gates

With wry humor and a sharp eye on a contemporary and modern Muslim family, this narrative introduces the Cachalia family—mother, father, and twins Zakir and Zakira. While Zakira's parents try to keep her on a short leash and have set her up with the devout heir to a sheep fortune, she and her brother are much more interested in living a less-than-sedate and distinctly nonobservant lifestyle.

Book Description Jacana Media (Pty) Ltd, South Africa, 2010. Paperback. Book Condition: New. Language: English . Brand New Book. Zakira, a Curry Mafia princess, is kept on a short but well-funded leash by her wealthy and conservative parents .or so they think. The meek and mild sari-wearing self that she projects for their benefit is a polar opposite to the vodka-guzzling, ciggie-smoking, night-clubbing Zakira that falls in love with Sofie, the punky-gorgeous leader of Al Sacareen - a group of girls who will change her life forever. As the productive recruiting grounds for the Saracens, an anarchist cell whose graffiti tags the overpasses of the city, Al Sacareen initiates Zakira into an underworld that wades grinning and lipsticked into an ongoing battle against tyranny and social injustice. The Saracens impending war with the city s sex slavers bring the girl gang head to head with Zakira s father and the vicious Curry Mafia that controls most of the city. As she is drawn ever deeper into the anti-world of the Saracens, Zakira finds herself faced with the simple but awful choices between family and lover, tradition and dissidence - choices that will ultimately force her to decide what will define her and who she will become.
