History of the United States, written by Charles and Mary Beard, was published in 1921. At the time, the book made waves. It was a radical new look into the history of America and into what propels the history of the United States. The Beard's main thesis is the following: economics drives United States History and America is ultimately a country where human rights are continually expanded and recognized.
The authors, now household names, wrote refreshingly interesting prose as they delved into the fantastic history of the United States. Throughout the book, they touch upon the history and development of the colonies, give a critique of the Constitution and Declaration of Independence, and take a close look at the various American inventors and the impact of their inventions on American culture and economics.
The book does not focus on the history of American war, but rather economic motivations that may have incited a war. The history is not so much a narrative but rather a topical study about various periods in American history. The Beard's were one of the first historians to suggest that the Civil War was based upon economic factors rather than slavery.
Though some of the language is outdated, History of the United States remains an important historical analysis and critique of America's past. Still read in classrooms, it gives an interesting and alternative look at the many facets that drive the nation of the United States of America.
