For Treasure Bound

9781776662579: For Treasure Bound

Published in 1897, For Treasure Bound is one of the author's earlier novels, but it is already a very mature work from a mature novelist and an adventure story that is well-written and very exciting.

The hero of the story is the author's namesake - or, to be more precise, bearing his pseudonym, Harry Collingwood - a man looking for treasures all over the Pacific islands and is also on a quest to find his father. During his double quest, he gets into all sorts of trouble and all sorts of adventures that involve pirates, beautiful ladies, even strange and dangerous creatures of the sea. Everything becomes resolved eventually, as it can be expected of any good adventure story with a good ending, but not before everything becomes entangled and certainly not before the protagonist passes the most difficult tests of courage and resourcefulness.

Collingwood seems to be an extraordinary story-teller, so it might come as a surprise to the reader that he was not a professional writer at all. His real name was William Joseph Cosens Lancaster and he was a naval engineer in the UK, remaining an amateur novelist, even if a very prolific one. Most of Collingwood's novels are for young readers, specifically teenage boys. He is best known for his science fiction series that features an extraordinary vehicle called the Flying Fish, a vessel that can function as an airship and a submarine as well and runs of a special, crystal fuel that can also be used as explosive. Collingwood describes the most fantastic adventures and vehicles in his stories, but with his technical knowledge and experience in engineering projects, he manages to make them all very credible, his novels providing excellent entertainment to any reader, young or old, who likes being drawn into an all-too-real fantasy world.
