9781781550892: Howard's Whirlybirds: Howard Hughes's Amazing Pioneering Helicopter Exploits

Howard Hughes, movie mogul, aviation pioneer and political hound dog, has always fascinated the public, yet his legacy involving the aviation industry is often under appreciated. Hughes Helicopters was one of America's pioneering aviation companies, but few have heard of it. It mass produced the first turbine-powered light observation helicopter, popularized the light helicopter trainer, tested a gigantic 'tip-jet' powered flying crane, and developed the world's most advanced attack helicopter, the iconic Apache. It also came under extremely close scrutiny by the US Congress. From the Second World War to the mid- 1980s, Howard's Whirlybirds tells how many of the world's most innovative helicopters were developed - the setbacks, the breakthroughs, the brilliance of the company's engineers and the test-flying bravado of fearless pilots - under the leadership of one of the most fascinating characters of the twentieth century. It aims to put Hughes Helicopters in its rightful place, at the forefront of America's aeronautical history.

From the Author:

Devoting half of my career to working in the technical side of aviation with the other half as a professional writer, I am passionate when it comes to writing about the aviation industry and its personalities. A decade at the helicopter company owned by Howard Hughes afforded me insights about the man and the company's unique aircraft. My current project is a biography of aviation icon Allen E. Paulson, the man who built Gulfstream Aerospace into a Fortune 500 company, set speed records, circulated with presidents and celebrities, and became a horseracing legend.

From the Inside Flap:

Aviation historian and writer Donald J. Porter authored the first definitive history of the Hughes OH-6A helicopter. He later wrote two books that profile the development of the Learjet and Cessna Citation business jets. During almost a decade at Hughes Helicopters, he worked in a variety of roles ranging from OH-6A technical representative in Vietnam to project engineer and proposal manager on the Apache program. Following a successful career as a corporate communications executive in the electronics industry, and later in a senior communications post at a state university, he now serves as a writer and consultant to the aviation industry. His previous books include The McDonnell Douglas OH-6A Helicopter (1990), Learjets: The World's Executive Aircraft (1991) and The Cessna Citations (1993).
Front cover: Boeing test pilots Rich Lee and Mark Metzger fly an AH-64D Apache Longbow over Saguaro Lake near Mesa, Arizona. (Bob Ferguson for The Boeing Co.)

Book Description Fonthill Media, United Kingdom, 2015. Hardback. Book Condition: New. Language: English . Brand New Book. Howard Hughes, the movie mogul, aviation pioneer and political hound dog, has always fascinated the public with his mixture of secrecy, dashing lifestyle and reclusiveness. Companies responsible for major technological leaps often become household names. An exception is Howard Hughes s pioneering helicopter company, Hughes Helicopters, a name that has fallen into oblivion. Yet most schoolboys in the world have heard of the company s prize-winning product: the Apache helicopter. Hughes popularised the light helicopter trainer, mass-produced the first turbine-powered light observation helicopter, led the way in hot cycle rotorcraft propulsion research and, finally, developed the world s most advanced attack helicopter that was purchased and saw service with the UK. Here s how some of the world s most innovative helicopters were developed. Covering the period from the Second World War until the mid-1980s, you will learn why Hughes military aircraft contracts came under close scrutiny by the US government. The story is rich with tales of technological breakthrough and test-flying bravado made possible by a small crew of engineers and daring pilots. Written by a technical expert and insider to the industry, Howard s Whirlybirds: Howard Hughes Amazing Pioneering Helicopter Exploits is a fascinating and alternative view on the phenomenal pioneer with unpublished photographs and material that will fascinate the aviation and military historian as well as the casual reader and cinema buff.
