Synopsis

The act of prayer has been recognized—by sages and skeptics alike—as a powerful way to enact positive physical, spiritual, and emotional change. Prayer has the power to take us beyond the rational mind, opening our hearts and engaging our souls. It brings us peace and health. Its aim is to uplift our spirits and bring us closer to the divine.     In Light the Flame, teacher and poet Andrew Harvey has gathered the 365 prayers that have most influenced his life, offering us a daily reminder of the sacred. Drawing insights from around the world, across religions, and an array of disciplines, Harvey provides inspiration from great spiritual minds like Rumi and Thomas Merton, activists like César Chávez and Mother Teresa, and philosophers like Nietzsche and Voltaire—plus he includes some of his own works. With themes that range from love and loss to unity and transformation, this luminous book will capture your imagination and nourish your soul.

Review

“With this book, Andrew Harvey has provided a long-awaited and much-needed gift—a book of prayers. People need to pray and many, surprisingly, do not know how. Aside from petition or emergency prayers, they have no experience of the bliss that one finds in the daily practice of reflecting upon illuminated words that draw you inward, away from the distractions of ordinary life.” —Caroline Myss

“These universal pieces of spiritual wisdom are sure to bring light to any heart, on any day. Thanks to the brilliant Andrew Harvey for mining so much gold.”

Marianne Williamson, New York Times best-selling author of A Return to Love and Illuminated Prayers

“Prayer is the medium of miracles. There is a prayer waiting for you inside this treasure of a book. This prayer is your new beginning. As you pray it, a new life will unfold before you.”

Robert Holden, author of Shift Happens! and Loveability

“Andrew Harvey’s latest book, Light the Flame, is a wonderful collection of deeply inspirational and enlightened prayers from around the world, taken from the great yogis, saints, and sages of the world’s wisdom traditions. These deeply moving prayers speak to that dimension of the ultimate Ground of Being, as personally selected and vetted by Andrew, a deeply enlightened and inspired soul himself. Take one of these prayers to heart each day, and you will almost certainly discover that Great Loving Spirit that is Ground, Goal, and Soul of all that is.”

Ken Wilber, author of The Integral Vision

Light the Flame is a beautiful collection of short and powerful daily prayers. It is organized to offer a different prayer for each day of the year. The practice of starting the day with quiet time and a daily prayer is an invaluable tool needed to strengthen not only Faith, but Hope and a calm and open heart. Armed with this guidance, we can go out into the world and be of service in a thousand different ways, and help to change the suffering into Light. This is another superb book by a brilliant writer, and I recommend it wholeheartedly.”

Ali MacGraw, actress/activist

“Andrew Harvey ignites the sacred flame of love with each of his prayers. Savor this magnificent offering and let the words penetrate your heart.”

Stephen Dinan, founder of The Shift Network and author of Radical Spirit
