Brown’s simple text invites young readers (who might need help with longer words, such as caterpillar) to imagine what is hidden behind a leafy canopy or under a pile of rocks. The reveal is brilliant: colorful, blocky illustrations on the right-hand pages are backed with high-contrast black-and-white pictures on the reverse, making for an ingenious shadow effect.
