From the 1700s, the declining Ottoman Empire served as a source of inspiration for the westernization of Russia. Comparisons between European and Ottoman diplomacy, warfare, and political organizations shaped Russian identity and provided the nation with a sense of superiority over its adversary. Tsar and Sultan offers a unique insight into Russian Orientalism as the intellectual force behind Russian-Ottoman encounters. Through war diaries and memoirs, accounts of captivity and diplomatic correspondences, Victor Taki's analysis of military documents demonstrates a crucial aspect of Russia's discovery of the Orient based on its rivalry with the Ottoman Empire. Narratives depicting the brutal realities of Russian-Turkish military conflicts influenced the Orientalization of the Ottoman Empire. In turn, Russian identity was built as the counter-image to the demonized Turk. This book explains the significance of Russian Orientalism on Russian identity and national policies of westernization. Students of both European and Middle East studies will appreciate Taki's unique approach to Russian-Turkish relations and their influence on Eurasian history.

About the Author:

Victor Taki is a Research Fellow at the Centre of Ukrainian and Belorussian Studies, Moscow State University. He previously held a Post Doctoral Fellowship at University of Alberta, Canada and holds a PhD. from Central European University.

Review:

‘Tsar and Sultan is an important contribution to our understanding of Orientalism that also has much to say about Westernisation. In his erudite new book, Victor Taki reveals the fascinating and often surprising ways Russians saw their great imperial rival to the East. And it is a pleasure to read. While he is well versed in post-colonial theory, the author deftly avoids becoming mired in excessive jargon.’ (- David Schimmelpenninck van der Oye, Professor of Russian History, Brock University)

‘Tsar and Sultan discusses in an entertaining and accessible way centuries of Russian perceptions and representations of the Ottoman Empire. Victor Taki does a good job revealing the complexity of the Russian perspectives upon the imperial rival that hides behind the “sick man” cliché. The book is a rewarding read for all those who seek to understand the cultural context behind one of the oldest imperial conflict.’ (- Alexei Miller, Professor, European University in Saint-Petersburg and Central European University in Budapest)

‘Taki's lively and well-researched study of Russian Orientalism from late Muscovite times until the Crimean War reviews the pomp and circumstance of Russian-Ottoman diplomatic ceremonies, the theme of Ottoman decline in Russian journalism, and the military details of Russian-Ottoman wars in Russian historiography. The book contains a great deal of fascinating, fresh information that sheds new light on Ottoman, Russian, and Balkan history.’ (– Lucien J. Frary, Associate Professor of History, Rider University)
