Ratchet is a coming of age story woven through an historical fantasy. Her adventures in seventeenth century England and Istanbul help her heal from old wounds becoming a happier version of herself. You meet real people from the past, including an infamous witch hunter, his real-life victims, and the famous Ottoman scholar, Katip Celebi. And of course, every witch has a telepathic cat.

Ratchet has been living in my head for a long time. It all started when a large, scarred, and skinny stray cat befriended us while we were living in a cottage at the edge of a village called South Nutfield, in Surrey, England. With absolutely no explanation for his appearance, my husband came up with the idea that he'd fallen off a witch's broom. Meet Oscar.
The coming of age themes, and struggling to let love in, were enriched by my previous profession as a psychologist, when I worked with lots of young people, including kids in foster care. For me, social workers are unsung heros, as are the many terrific foster parents out there. (Please rest assured, that all the characters are fictitious, and any resemblance to real people is purely coincidental.)
The plot developed organically, and it was great fun researching the English and Ottoman history needed for this book.
I've written another middle-grade novel, Oswald, the Almost Famous Opossum. This book is lavishly illustrated by Varya Kolesnikova. Other books for young people and adults are in the works.
I've come to writing fiction after a career in psychology. I was lucky in having a lot of fascinating work experiences that took me from the chimp house, into the White House, with a lot of brain slicing in between.
I'm from the USA, mostly from the East Coast, and moved to the United Kingdom in 2004 to join my then partner, now husband (I don't think he could understand my accent--didn't realise what he was agreeing to). We live on the South Coast of this island nation where we run a B&B for English Language students, and I have the pleasure of writing full-time.
