From the Back Cover

In 2016, when the idea for this book formed, the national opioid overdose epidemic was over 52,000 lethal drug overdoses, over 20,000 overdose deaths related to pain killers, and close to 13,000 overdose deaths related to heroin. As of January 2019, there are estimated to be more than 130 people who die daily from overdosing on opioids. Though the numbers have dropped slightly since 2015, the crisis is still real.

As an educator, it breaks my heart to hear of the death of a former student due to opioid addiction. In so many cases, this death could have been prevented. Yet, in so many other cases, the life of a young person is lost despite the best efforts of friends, family, counselors, and medical professionals.

In writing this story, I didn't want to patronize the reader by offering some easy solution to helping a friend or family member overcome the addiction. Rather, what I tried to do in these pages is present the scenario as it really is: dark. Yet, even in the darkness, there is always a glimmer of hope to hold onto. In that hope, we hold fast to our loved ones, even when they push us away. We fight for them, even when they've given up the fight. And we find them, even when they seem so hopelessly lost. In the end, we desperately hold onto life.
