The Magic of a Name tells the story of the first 40 years of Britain's most prestigious manufacturer - Rolls-Royce. Beginning with the historic meeting in 1904 of Henry Royce and the Honourable C.S. Rolls, and the birth in 1906 of the legendary Silver Ghost, Peter Pugh tells a story of genius, skill, hard work and dedication which gave the world cars and aero engines unrivalled in their excellence. In 1915, 100 years ago, the pair produced their first aero engine, the Eagle which along with the Hawk, Falcon and Condor proved themselves in battle in the First World War. In the Second the totemic Merlin was installed in the Spitfire and built in a race against time in 1940 to help win the Battle of Britain. With unrivalled access to the company's archives, Peter Pugh's history is a unique portrait of both an iconic name and of British industry at its best.

About the Author:

Peter Pugh was educated at Oundle and Cambridge, where he read History , and has written more than 30 books on business, both in Britain and overseas.

From Library Journal:

The name Rolls-Royce is synonymous with luxury, beauty, and unrivaled excellence in car manufacture, but many people don't realize that there is much more to Rolls-Royce than just cars. Most commercial jets are powered by Rolls-Royce engines, and the company remains one of the top three aero engine manufacturers in the world. In this book, the first of a definitive two-volume history of the Rolls-Royce company, Pugh recounts the fascinating first 50 years of the company. Researched from company archives, this is not a book simply about cars but instead a well-researched historical account of a company whose achievements paralleled the technological developments of the 20th century. Indeed, the expertise and engineering innovations of Henry Rolls and Charles Royce were crucial to the Allied victory. Useful for transportation libraries but also for history and military collections.DEric C. Shoaf, Brown Univ. Lib., Providence, RI

Book Description Icon Pub., London, 2001. Hard Cover. Condition: New. Photos (illustrator). First Thus. 2001 Hardcover book ; without dj . BRAND NEW from 2001 publisher . Never opened , Never read , Never marked . Book size: 7" wide x 10" tall x 1-1/3" size; weighs over 2-1/2 pounds; 340 pages with index ; illustrated with black & white photographs . This is The First 40 Years , Volume One . Many books have been written about Rolls-Royce over the years. The Bibliography included in this volume shows nearly 50 specifically on Rolls Royce cars , or aero engines, or both . and there are hundreds more which devote many words to RR products and their importance . However most of those books are either biographies of the leading personalities , or works that tackle specific aspects of the cars or the aero engines . The last publication to attempt a comprehensive history of Rolls-Royce was Harold Nockold's " The Magic of a Name " . published by Foulis in 1938, and reprinted in 1972 . This book, and its sequel , is the first attempt since the Nockolds book to cover comprehensively the story of Rolls-Royce . from its earliest days to the present . The Rolls-Royce name is magic . amde so by the calibre of its people and its products . and the title " The Magic of a Name " is singularly appropriate. Foulis , now Haynes Publishing, has kindly allowed the present publisher to use the title again . Chapters include the first meeting between Sir Henry Royce and The Hon. Charles Rolls . " The Prime Movers " . as well as on ' the most perfect cars ' , from the Silver Ghost and on . as well as chapters on the thinking designers . RR preparing for war . turbine engines . and much much more . This book is : " The Magic of a Name - The Rolls-Royce Story - The First 40 Years " . Part One . by Peter Pugh . published by Icon Publishing, London , 2001 Hard cover book *** Secure packing for Safe Shipping since 1965 *** Size: 7 x 10 x 1-1/3 ". Seller Inventory # 5753
