Men’s adventure magazines were a form of pulp publishing which flourished in 1950s and 1960s America, pandering to the cruelty and lust of young men with luridly illustrated stories of war, sleaze and savagery. They arose partly in response to the inauguration of the Comics Code in 1954, as a way of circumventing censorship by presenting material in a new, “adults-only” format. The prime years of the men’s adventure magazine unleashed a visual and verbal deluge of exposed and tormented flesh, bloody mayhem and sexual delinquency, representing a unique cultural phenomenon in US publishing and art.
SOFT BLONDES IN THE CLAWS OF TORTURE HELL is a new anthology which collects some prime examples of text and artwork from a range of men’s adventure magazines published during the prime years of the genre. The book is divided into two main sections: FEATURES includes a selection of sensationalistic, semi-factual confessions and case histories on such subjects as Wild West massacres, serial killers, mobsters, female chain gangs, and other aberrations; and FICTION collects numerous examples of garishly illustrated short pulp fiction, with categories including war, white slavery, Nazi horror, jungle savagery, Red menace, Devil worship, torture, sadism and erotic carnage. The book also features numerous examples of interior art from classic men’s magazines, and includes 35 features and stories, with more than 50 illustrations, and 16 pages of full colour.
Pulp Mayhem is an illustrated book series of vintage pulp fiction, art and pop culture.

About the Author:

Editor Pep Pentangeli is an avid life-long collector of comics and pulp magazines, and publisher of the 1990s fanzine, Man’s Guts And Glory.

Excerpt. Reprinted by permission. All rights reserved.:

"I COUNTED NINETEEN WOMEN in the jungle clearing, most of them young – in their early twenties, I judged – with that curiously child-like look that so many Vietnamese women have.

But these were no children. Only a few minutes before, they’d killed my Vietnamese jeep driver in cold blood, gunning him down when he’d reached for his .45, then impaling him like a barbecued pig with a sharpened bamboo spear while he lay helpless on the ground.

Apparently they had no intention of killing me – at least not immediately. I watched as they set about systematically looting my jeep of its supplies and weapons. I couldn’t have interfered even if I’d dared to. My hands were tied expertly behind my back, and at my side there was a slim girl in cotton trousers and a man’s undershirt pointing my own gun at me. She looked as if she knew how to use it.

The band of women were clad in a motley collection of clothing, and carried an even motlier array of weapons. Most of them wore the cotton clothing usually worn by Vietnamese peasant men, torn and ill-fitting, with the wide conical hats of straw that you see everywhere in Vietnam. A couple of the younger girls wore sarongs. One energetic beauty, standing on the hood of the jeep and giving orders wore only a pair of ragged shorts and a bandolier of cartridges over her shoulder.

I saw an American M-1 rifle, a Luger, a couple of ancient French rifles, and a Colt revolver. The balance of the women were armed with sharp-edged parangs or bamboo spears.

When they’d taken everything they wanted, the woman in the ragged shorts yelled an order. They poured gasoline over my jeep and set it on fire. Then my guard prodded me with the .45, and they set off down the jungle trail, herding me along like a water buffalo.

At midday, they stopped to eat. They gave me a bowl of rice, and when they saw that I couldn’t manage with my hands tied, one of them fed me. My chances of staying alive began to look even better.

But my heart sank again when we reached the first village. The villagers were obviously terrified of these women. They brought out a pitifully meager offering of rice and a few scrawny plucked chickens. When one of the villagers protested, a trouser-clad girl slapped him, and he came across with some rice and a little packet of tea.

I began to understand why it had been so easy for them to ambush me. Obviously the peasants in the villages I had passed through had kept them informed of my progress. ..."
